BORN TO DRAW AND SCULPT THE WORLD AROUND ME
I am an illustrator and a sculptor who creates detailed themes in mediums such as paper, clay, and wood. These themes are further enhanced with layers of intricate designs through the use of paints. I am also a storyteller. My stories, with moral lessons behind them, inspire my work.
My work is driven by a peculiar interpretation of tales, myths, legends, culture, traditions, fashion, and daily living. With these stories as inspiration, I capture my own fantasies onto paper in the form of an illustration or a final painting. When I want to transform these into 3D work, I use them to guide every cut I make in the wood or any other medium I choose. In my creative process, I take the art of detail to a higher level. When working with wood, I use various carving styles such as chip carving, marquetry, inlay work, and the use of non-wood materials. I like to create patterns in clothing inspired by fashions from other times. This approach makes my 3D work not only detailed but also tactile, layered, full of energy, and color. Still, I feel my work is incomplete until it elicits a sense of joy, amusement, or another positive emotion from my audience. I work hard to make this happen by introducing elements that tickle the senses or twist reality.
I strive to create works of art that celebrate ‘beauty in detail’. Everything that is beautiful inspires me. We are losing beauty in our society, affecting our language, our music, and our manners; as if beauty and good taste have no place in our lives. Beauty was at the center of our civilization for over 2000 years, and it is a universal need to counteract the chaos of life. I believe what makes something beautiful and meaningful, is the effort and love that goes into creating it. Down to the very last detail.
